Given the numerous choices available, selecting suitable meals for your youngsters might seem daunting. To assist with this, we contacted an author who specializes in cooking for babies and kids.
Annabel Karmel
MBE, who has shared her top tips for creating easy, healthy meals that are both nourishing and delicious.
1. Present bitter flavors at an early stage
Babies arrive predisposed to enjoy sweetness because their initial exposure is typically through breastmilk or formula, both of which contain naturally sweet-tasting lactose,” says Karmel. “It’s still important to introduce sweet options like carrots and butternut squash along with fruits as introductory foods; however, make sure you’re also giving them bitter veggies right from the start.
Broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower are quite different from what they know, so it will require some persistence to help them embrace these tastes.
Occasionally, it comes down to preparing or serving vegetables in a different way.
My daughter Scarlett despised cauliflower until we tried roasting it; it turned out to be an entirely new experience,” explains the author. “When roasted, the cauliflower develops a caramelized exterior, giving it a nutty, buttery taste.
2. Don’t put off incorporating essential nutrients into their diet.
“If you are starting to wean at six months, offer fruit and veg for the first couple of weeks and then start introducing foods containing critical nutrients, like protein, iron and omega 3 essential fatty acids fairly quickly,” advises Karmel.
She suggests providing iron-rich foods to your infant two times daily. Alternatively, if your baby follows a vegetarian diet, these should be offered at each mealtime (approximately three times per day).
Vitamin C aids in absorbing iron, so consider combining iron-rich foods with sources of Vitamin C such as strawberries, mangoes, orange slices, bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, or spinach,” suggests Karmel. “Moreover, for proper brain growth, these vital omega-3 fatty acids are crucial; thus, offer oily fish like salmon at least two times each week.
3. Introduce finger foods
Soft finger foods can be introduced at around six months of age and they excel in fostering independence, bringing new textures into their diet, and honing hand-to-eye coordination,” explains Karmel. “Babies and toddlers love items like mini frittatas, tater tots, croquettes, and vegetable fritters; plus, making them yourself is fast, simple, and budget-friendly.
4. Exchange sweetened breakfast cereals for oatmeal
Karmel suggests opting for porridge, preparing overnight oats, or having toast topped with coarsely chopped nuts and seeds, followed by serving them with Greek yogurt and berries. She also notes that oats can be an excellent foundation for healthier pancakes—simply mix together mashed bananas, eggs, and oats.
5. Create your own frozen treats filled with surprises.
Homemade popsicles typically have less sugar, and you can enhance them with vegetables as well,” explains Karmel. “This method is ideal for utilizing fruits or veggies that are about to go bad. My favorite mix is beetroot and berries, but how about trying carrot, kiwi, mango, and banana instead?
6. Offer healthy snacks
Snacking has become a significant component of our children’s regular eating habits, and more often than not, it is portrayed negatively because of the alarming rise in childhood obesity,” acknowledges Karmel. “Responsible snacking can be a crucial provider of essential nutrients or serve as a vital energy booster, especially since they are acquiring numerous new abilities.
Maintaining a healthy snack routine involves balancing different tastes and consistencies. Help your children discover novel flavors as they keep their appetites satisfied and well-nourished.
Consider options like fruits paired with yogurt, sliced bananas topped with peanut butter, savory muffins, avocado spread on toast, filled pittas, hummus alongside vegetable sticks, for instance.
