According to researchers, every individual with blue eyes can trace their ancestry back to a solitary European from between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago.
What was the process behind their solution? Initially, all humans possessed brown eyes in different tones until a particular genetic alteration brought about the change.
The mutation involves a gene known as HERC2, which turns off OCA2—the gene responsible for regulating the amount of brown pigment our bodies produce.
That’s the reason eyes turn blue.

Researchers estimate that merely 8 to 10 percent of people have blue eyes, and eye color doesn’t finalize until later in development. This means that kids born with blue eyes might eventually end up having brown eyes as adults due to the activation of the brown pigment.

A team at the University of Copenhagen released research on the subject.
Professor Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine
said
: “Originally, we all had brown eyes. But a genetic mutation affecting the OCA2 gene in our chromosomes resulted in the creation of a ‘switch,’ which literally “turned off” the ability to produce brown eyes.”
