Danny McBride Reveals His Involvement in the Kanye West Biopic Controversy

Back in 2022, the
Eastbound & Down
star
revealed that the
controversial rapper
had stunned him with the casting concept in 2018.

At a comedy actor roundtable session organized by
The Hollywood Reporter
McBride disclosed, “Once, I received a phone call from Kanye West, and seriously, he visited my home in South Carolina with the request for me to act in one of his movies.”

A skeptical Bowen Yang, who was also participating in the roundtable, questioned, “You to play
him
?!”

Yep,” McBride affirmed, “He went down to South Carolina, and I accompanied him in a boat all day. He mentioned that he wished for me to make a film about his life, with me playing him.

Yang wondered if West might have drawn inspiration for the film from Todd Haynes’ work.

In this film, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was portrayed by multiple actors such as Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw, and Marcus Carl Franklin.

At the time, McBride stated succinctly: “It was one of the most remarkable days ever. It was quite amazing.”

McBride was questioned about whether there was an “afterward to that story.”

The 48-year-old comic responded saying, “Once he departed, I messaged him, simply stating, ‘Thank you very much for stopping by. I’ll take responsibility for this; let me see what solutions I can devise.'”

He replied mentioning he enjoyed himself immensely and would cherish that day for eternity. After that, we never communicated again.

A humorous story centered around a family who runs a large megachurch, all while West was trying to establish his own religious community.

“We got there first!” McBride exclaimed with a laugh. “I suppose great minds do think alike.”
