What they’re saying

Some local business owners are now starting a petition, asking for future events to be banned. Some business owners claim this is one of many violent events, but not everyone agrees.

Mike Nen is the host of the lowrider podcast called Live Ride, which is centered on community, cars and culture.

“It’s an art form, it’s a way of life,” he said.

Although Sunday’s Cinco de Mayo celebration was not specifically a lowrider event, but instead aimed at honoring Chicano culture, Nen believes that people immediately linked the two. This association, in his view, comes with an misplaced blame regarding the violence.

“When we organize events for the community, they are always centered around families. We aim to challenge the stereotypes associated with gang activity, firearms, and such issues. That’s what I’m talking about,” Nen stated.

Many witnesses stressed the event was family-friendly and safe before shots were fired in the parking lot.

Nevertheless, certain business proprietors in downtown Glendale assert that Sunday showcased continuing and recurrent problems.

A current Change.org petition is now advocating for an all-city prohibition on nighttime cruises connected to lowrider gatherings.

The petition, which has collected roughly 75 signatures, states in part, “These events are not innocent gatherings of cars.” It goes on to mention their association with gun violence, dangerous driving, illegal street races, public drunkenness, and hindered access for local establishments.

Entrepreneurs such as Clinto Newsom, have differing opinions.

“When I host these events over there, I conduct my business as well. Therefore, I am not bothered by the car shows or music festivals happening there. They attract more visitors to downtown Glendale, which is beneficial,” Newsom stated.

Ken Brown from Drawn To Comics across the street mentions he has never encountered any issues as well.

“I wasn’t expecting this event at all. It’s happening in the downtown city area, so naturally, some issues will arise,” Brown stated.

FOX 10 reached out to the business owner who started the change.org petition, but her business was closed on May 6 and attempts to reach her online were unsuccessful.

Police say this group involved people who knew one another and had a history of bad blood. Investigators can’t confirm any kind of gang affiliation.

Vigil held for victims

On May 6, family and friends of the shooting victims organized individual memorial services.

“I’ve been proud of that boy, since the day he was born, I have been proud of him. He never ceased to amaze me. … He never left the house without telling us, ‘Bye mama, bye dad. I love you guys. I’ll see you in a little bit,’ and I would always tell him, ‘Be careful. I love you. Drive safe. Look out for everyone else. I trust you, just watch out for everyone else.’ And he always came back, except for the other night,” the parents of Suniga said.

Stephanie Ortega spoke about the loss of her sons.

“I’m hurt. That was my oldest son and baby boy. I don’t know what to do,” she said.

What you can do

“We are still looking for those responsible for the homicide that took place on Sunday, May 4, 2025. We have

set up a portal

where people can submit video and photos from the event anonymously. The hope is that our detectives will see something in those photos/videos that will help us narrow down who we are looking for and what happened that led up to this violence,” Glendale Police said on May 6.
