India Strikes Back: Pakistan Faces Retaliation Over Kashmir Attack

India struck Pakistani-controlled territory early Wednesday in response to a massacre of tourists in an Indian-controlled territory last month.

The missile attack left eight people and one child dead, as well as multiple others wounded,
as reported by The Associated Press
.

In a press statement, the Indian government asserts that it targeted infrastructure utilized by militants, as mentioned in their announcement: “Terrorist attacks against India have been orchestrated and commanded from these locations.”

The
The U.S. Embassy in India stated
no Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets were hit, noting India only targeted “known terror camps.”

Pakistan’s Premier Shehbaz Sharif
in a post on the social platform X
called the strikes “cowardly attacks” and said they were “at five locations in Pakistan.” He added that Pakistan “reserves the absolute right to respond decisively to this unprovoked Indian attack.”

Attaullah Tarar, the Pakistani government official serving as the federal minister for information and broadcasting,
claimed the attack
was about “unarmed civilians and mosques within Pakistan.” He also stated that “The Armed Forces of Pakistan are providing a decisive retaliation” against the missile strikes.

Representatives from both administrations assert that three Indian aircraft and one unmanned aerial vehicle were brought down; however, this assertion remains unverified.

The Pakistan Foreign Affairs Office called the attack “unprovoked,” also stating that the attack targeted the “civilian population.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio
said he is monitoring
the situation “closely,” standing by
President Trump’s comments
earlier in the day that he hopes the conflict between the two countries ends soon.

Rubio stated that he will “keep working with both Indian and Pakistani leaders to achieve a peaceful solution.”

Tensions escalated between the two nations after a militant assault occurred in the Indian-administered section of the contested Kashmir territory last month. This region has long been a source of dispute between India and Pakistan. The incident resulted in 26 fatalities. Although India accuses Pakistan of involvement, Pakistan refutes these allegations.

The Hill has contacted the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C., seeking their input.
