A recently convened meeting organized by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) involving the House Republican Conference regarding President Donald Trump’s key legislative initiatives fell apart due to arguments among various factions of legislators.

More centrist House Republicans and representatives from competitive districts aim to protect the widely supported program from significant reductions.
Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), who has a moderate stance, stated that the House should not become “its own worst adversary” as it strives to enact laws with only a narrow seven-vote advantage. Meanwhile, Representative Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.), whose district is considered highly competitive within Long Island, cautions his Republican colleagues that the spending reductions they desire might lead to tangible repercussions which could hurt their chances in upcoming midterm elections.

“I don’t intend to come across as harsh,” Garbarino said to CNN. “I believe that if it appears we are genuinely causing harm to individuals, it will anger the American public. And once you upset them, they are likely not going to support your candidacy.”
However, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who is among the more hardline members of the House Republican Conference, argued that voters would punish them if they didn’t enact significant cuts to the federal budget — including Medicaid — in the budget bill Johnson hopes to pass by the end of the month.
“My colleagues, who prefer avoiding this issue, are sticking their heads in the sand and are already concerned with next year’s elections,” Roy said to the network. “The most effective approach to winning elections is by delivering tangible results.”
“I am ready to share my own list of non-negotiables if they wish for me to do so,” he added.
The intense gathering occurs shortly following a collection of centrist Republicans.

They have stated that they won’t support any final legislation that includes significant reductions in federal funding for state Medicaid programs. However, more conservative representatives such as Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) vowed to oppose the bill unless it reduces federal expenditures by at least $1.5 trillion—achieved mainly by cutting into Medicaid—and would reject it even under pressure from President Trump who might prefer a less austere version of the bill. Given potential absences, Johnson cannot allow more than three defectors within his own party to successfully push any measure through the House.
