Marathon Madness: My Wife’s Training Takes Over Our Lives

I hold great admiration for individuals who take on the challenge of running the 26.2 miles needed for a marathon.

That fosters mental and physical growth to the extent that both can reach the finish line together.

Nevertheless, my admiration goes out even more to the runner’s support team—the quiet majority—who endure a completely distinct challenge. Their peaceful home life gets disrupted by the sight of an A4 sheet stuck on the refrigerator door.

Hail the workout plan!

I suggest consulting the Oracle,” I respond, gesturing toward the paper with my head lowered.

My wife’s life is now dictated by this schedule, and consequently, ours are too.

She’s obsessed with ticking off her base mileage runs (three to four times a week) and then her once-a-week long run.

Next up is the speed workouts, including tempo runs (aimed at enhancing pace and endurance naturally), along with cross-training and strength exercises designed to prevent injuries.

Fortunately, there are rest days, but she appears to dedicate much of her time during these periods to browsing different running forums where she discusses the midsole thickness of training shoes—pardon me, running shoes—and uses Google to find the most effective methods to prevent thigh irritation.

Cult classic depended on Adam Sandler fulfilling the star’s sole requirement.

We had no idea of the challenges ahead when my spouse informed us about being chosen via the lottery to participate in the marathon. We were simply overjoyed for her because this has long been one of her dreams listed in her bucket list.

Soon enough, though, reality set in when I lost my wife, and the children their mother, to the relentless overseer called Strava.

Even though she gladly went above and beyond to ensure minimal disturbance to our family routine and started her runs as early as 5 am, we felt the most sensible approach was to lend a hand and cover any gaps she might have left.

Therefore, we divided the household chores among the non-running members of the group, and before too long, the children started to feel resentment towards the race each time they heard the vacuum cleaner go by.

The other day, I distinctly heard someone grumble, “Bloody Paula Radcliffe,” as they were filling up the dishwasher.

When it comes to cooking, our mealtime gatherings—once an opportunity for everyone to come together and discuss their day—are now a well-choreographed frenzy. My wife searches aimlessly around the kitchen holding a bowl of pasta, frantically seeking out the charger for her Garmin, while the rest of us take our seats to enjoy some pie and mashed potatoes.

And when our dining schedules occasionally align, she prepares an entirely separate dish for herself. Evidently, having roast beef along with all the fixings doesn’t make for ideal pre-fuel before embarking on a lengthy 15-mile trek.

Certainly, our evenings haven’t been much affected by the marathon itself. By unchanged, I mean we’ve spent them watching countless first-person videos of different people completing their sub-four-hour races on YouTube instead of catching up on the newest series on Netflix.

It’s not like we lack support at all. Naturally, everyone understands that the dedication and resolve needed to prepare for such events are enormous, and we can’t help but feel incredibly proud of her.

When she ultimately reaches that finish line (and I am certain she will reach it), there will surely be an immense sense of relief accompanied by emotional outpourings like crying and lots of embracing as everyone celebrates the end of this arduous journey at last.

Of course, it’s just myself and the children.
