This Mother’s Day weekend holds special significance for a mother who crossed the University of South Florida graduation platform on Thursday after obtaining her master’s degree and will shortly see her son accept his bachelor’s diploma as well.

The backstory

While her family, including her son named Bennett, looked on from the audience, Tammy Moscato was awarded her Master’s degree in Education.

“I believe it’s safe to say I feel proud of myself. This was a lengthy and difficult journey,” Tammy stated.

Tammy’s path could be seen as starting two years prior when she returned to academia, or way back in 2002, during her pregnancy with Bennett, which caused her to miss her college commencement ceremony.

What they’re saying

She remarked, ‘It’s always an opportune moment to strive for self-improvement. As someone who values continuous learning throughout their life, my question remains—why wait until later?’

This weekend, Tammy will be in the crowd as Bennett receives a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree.

She said she’s cherished the time they’ve spent together, often studying at home.

“We would post up on opposite ends of the couch, you know, really go back and forth, help each other cite things, search for scholarly articles, that kind of thing,” she said. “I think I’m more proud of him. As a mom, that’s what you want. You want your children to be happy and to thrive and to do well.”

What’s next

While her son begins his career following commencement, Tammy plans to stay in her current role. She’s currently not planning on going back into the classroom to teach, but wouldn’t rule it out, adding, “who knows what the future brings?”
