Petersburg’s Real-Estate Tax Blunder: How the City Is Rectifying 500 Incorrect Bills

Posted on

A mistake made in processing Petersburg’s fourth-quarter real-estate tax bills made 500 of them incorrect and is prompting a do-over for the affected property owners.

Joanne Williams, a city spokesperson, stated in an announcement on May 7 that revised invoices would be sent out on May 15. She advised that anyone receiving a notice on this date should “ignore the initial real estate tax bill they have received and instead make their payment using the second bill,” as reported on May 7.

The issue occurred as Petersburg’s customer service and collections division utilized incorrect information rather than the updated report provided by the assessor and the commissioner of revenue. This mistake led to erroneous notices being dispatched to both present property owners and those who had sold their properties during the 2024 fiscal year.

“These bills were sent to the former property owners instead of the new property owners,” Williams said in the statement. “Some bills also do not reflect a change in addresses.”

She added that city administration “is taking steps to ensure that billing mistakes do not continue and is committed to resolving any concerns as quickly as possible.” Anyone with questions about their bills should call (804) 733-2346 or
