Calgary Gears Up for a Bustling Construction Season

The
City of Calgary
is introducing a new, all-inclusive website designed to assist motorists in keeping track of the constantly changing street closings in urban areas.

The
Plan Your Trip
portal gives Calgarians access to real-time traffic cameras, maps and estimated travel times to better plan the best route.

On an average weekday, the city’s road network sees 5.5 million daily trips with Calgarians traveling to work, school and out running errands.

These journeys can be considerably affected during the construction season due to sudden lane closings.

The City’s Traffic Management unit recognizes the inconveniences and aggravation caused by construction for Calgary motorists, yet asserts that the work is essential. They highlight the restricted timeframe available due to Calgary’s climate conditions as a factor necessitating these projects. TheTraffic Management Centre keeps watch over 200 traffic cameras around the clock, enabling swift action should there be heightened gridlock, an accident, or any unforeseen circumstances impeding traffic flow.

These teams can remotely adjust traffic signals to ease congestion as needed and modify the signal timings using past data to reduce disruptions.

Even though it might appear as if the lane closings occur randomly without end, the traffic management center asserts that significant planning precedes each approval for a closure or diversion. Various elements factor into these decisions, such as ensuring access for emergency services, coordinating with existing diversions, and assessing potential impacts on nearby residences and commercial establishments.

Calgarians are asked to show some additional patience during this construction season as teams strive to finish essential roadway improvements for a swiftly expanding city.
