Pirates Fan Speaks After Terrifying 21-Foot Fall Onto Field: “It Felt Like Everything Was Broken”

The individual who experienced a frightening fall onto the field at PNC Park broke his silence for the first time following the event on April 30.

Kavan Markwood informed TribLive on Wednesday that despite having “broken everything,” he was “doing fine.”

“I’m having trouble sleeping because my back hurts quite a bit,” he said to the publication.

Markwood stumbled during the game on April 30 between the Pirates and Cubs and stayed at Allegheny General Hospital for treatment.

He informed the outlet that he will discuss the entire matter further once he is discharged from the hospital in approximately one week.

“I believe once I’m back home, I’ll simply apply some ice,” Markwood mentioned regarding his injuries.

Dr. Allan Philp, Allegheny General Hospital’s chief medical officer, informed journalists on Wednesday that Markwood has “shown good progress.”

“He has reached a stage where he no longer needs the ventilator, he has been moved out of the ICU, and is getting ready for the subsequent phase, which involves physical therapy and rehabilitation,” explained Philp.

Taryn, Markwood’s sister, mentioned to the publication that he began walking, and she conveyed her appreciation for the support they have received from everyone since then.

“I’m extremely thankful that he’s still with me,” she stated.

Inside the stadium, Markwood was seen leaping into the air to celebrate a play when he fell, landing with an impact on his stomach against the railing before toppling over.

The match faced a delay of 10 minutes as Markwood received treatment and was subsequently moved off the field.

After the match, Pirates chairman Bob Nutting conveyed his sorrow regarding the incident.
