Weather Experts Teach Students About Severe Safety This Week

The KMBC 9 News First Alert Weather Team is returning to schools throughout this week — focusing on educating students about staying safe during extreme weather conditions.

The severe weather season has begun in our region, and it’s crucial for students to understand what constitutes a storm, recognize warning signs, grasp the significance of alerts, and learn how to select a secure place for taking cover.

Day 1: Wendell Phillips Elementary School

On Monday, Johnny Rowlands of News Chopper 9 touched down at Wendell Phillips Elementary School in Kansas City, Missouri. He assisted in explaining the experience of identifying storms from above.


Day 2: Madison Place Elementary School

On day two, we visit Madison Place Elementary in Olathe. Here, the students discovered the most secure locations to seek shelter when faced with a tornado whether they are at school, at home, or traveling in their vehicle.

They also discovered how graphics appear contrasting against the green screen.


Day 3: The Feast of Our Lady of Presentation

Stunning weather greeted everyone with a welcoming atmosphere at Our Lady of Presentation as we entered into the third day of Weather Week. Throughout the day, students discovered various conditions leading to intense storms and were reassured about staying calm during such events since they understand how to respond properly. After all, knowledge empowers us!
